We have an AMAZING team of volunteers at El Refugio, but we are always in need of more people to help!
Shelter Volunteers
We welcome local permanent volunteers as well as volunteers who are visiting the area and can commit to at least one month with us. We also ask volunteers to commit to working at least one shift each week. Children between the ages of 13 and 17 are welcome, but they must be supervised by a parent or legal guardian who is also volunteering during the same shift.
Shelter volunteers engage in a variety of activities and chores during their shifts, including:
- walking, cuddling, bathing and playing with the dogs
- playing with and cuddling the cats
- feeding the cats and dogs
- cleaning dog kennels and cat rooms
- assisting with the administration of medications
- helping new dog and cat intakes get settled in to the shelter
- making each one of our animals feel loved.
Other Volunteer Opportunities
We need your help in other ways, too, including:
- Foster families to temporarily care for animals in their home
- Adoption and foster programs
- Education programs in both schools and the community at large
- Fundraising, donation programs, event coordination, and grant writing
- Community outreach and assistance
- Social media (Facebook and Instagram) and website maintenance
- Marketing and communications
If being a shelter volunteer or any of the other opportunities with us sound interesting to you, we would love to have your help! Anyone with a willingness to help, a love of cats and dogs, a serious interest in volunteerism for animal welfare, and a great overall attitude is welcome!
